Description

Dahlia ‘Penhill Dark Monarch’ is a spectacular dinnerplate dahlia known for its enormous, painterly blooms that can reach 25–30 cm across. This is a variety that commands attention in the garden, with flowers that feel loose, layered, and beautifully untamed. The blooms feature broad, ruffled petals that twist and curl at the edges, creating a soft, windswept effect even at full size. Its colouring is richly complex, blending smoky plum, dusty raspberry, muted apricot, and soft lilac tones. Each flower is subtly different, with shifting hues depending on light and maturity, giving the plant a constantly changing appearance through the season.

Plants grow to around 120–150 cm tall and produce strong, long stems that support the large blooms well, although staking is recommended due to their weight. Flowering begins in midsummer and continues until the first frost, especially when regularly cut. In the garden, ‘Penhill Dark Monarch’ works best as a focal point where its scale can be fully appreciated. It pairs beautifully with soft blush tones, creams, and warm apricots, while also adding contrast to deeper burgundy and plum plantings. Despite its size, the ruffled form keeps the overall effect relaxed rather than formal.

As a cut flower, it is exceptional. A single stem can anchor an entire arrangement, bringing volume, texture, and subtle colour variation that works especially well in natural, garden-style bouquets.

Plant tubers in spring after the risk of frost has passed, in a sunny position with rich, well-drained soil. Give plants plenty of space to grow and stake early to support strong stem development. In colder regions, lift and store tubers after the first frost.

          - Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.

          - Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
