Galanthus (Snowdrops)
The welcome sight of a pretty Snowdrop emerging from a cold ground is one of the first signs that Spring is approaching. These delicate, yet hardy little flowers are a classic sight and their pure white blooms with green accents are in great contrast to the riot of colour Spring has waiting in store, just a few weeks around the corner.

Galanthus Bulbs - Snowdrops
Snowdrops are tougher than they look
They may look very delicate – but as is proven time and again, looks can be deceiving. In especially cold spells you might spot Snowdrops wilting to the ground, only to suddenly revitalise once the temperature rises. The reason for this is that plant tissue is often damaged or killed by ice crystals that form in the cells during freezing, however, many plants, including Snowdrops, have ‘anti-freeze’ proteins that help prevent these ice crystals forming, thus protecting the plant cells from damage and allowing them to ‘resurrect’ themselves. This, however, is not the only Superhero feature of Galanthus – did you know that Snowdrop leaves have specially hardened tips to help them break through frozen soil?
Galanthus bulbs – the more the merrier
Snowdrop bulbs have fantastic naturalising properties. Generally, they will take a year to get established and in their second year, will produce more flowers and begin to multiply and spread. Galanthus bulbs are particularly effective when planted in mass displays and look incredible when planted and left to naturalise in lawns, woodland settings and along walkways and paths. For best effect, plant in groups of at least 25 bulbs.
Galanthus fun fact
Recent research has shown that the average flowering date of the common Snowdrop has moved from around the end of February in the 1950s to early January!
