Description

Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' is a striking globeflower with large, vivid golden-orange blooms that bring plenty of colour to the garden from late spring into summer. The bowl-shaped flowers are held on strong, upright stems above a mound of finely divided, dark green foliage.

An excellent choice for areas where the soil stays moist, 'Golden Queen' is particularly well suited to pond edges, stream banks, bog gardens and damp borders. It is also a long-lived perennial that forms larger, more impressive clumps over time.

Why grow Trollius 'Golden Queen'?

  • Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Large, bright golden-orange flowers
  • Strong stems that do not usually require staking
  • Flowers from late spring into midsummer
  • Excellent for pond edges, bog gardens and damp borders
  • Thrives in heavy and clay soils
  • Deer and rabbit resistant
  • Attracts bees and butterflies
  • Excellent as a cut flower
  • Hardy perennial that returns year after year

Growing information

  • Height: 60–90 cm
  • Spread: 45–65 cm
  • Flowering time: Late spring to midsummer
  • Position: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Rich, consistently moist to wet soil; tolerates heavy and clay soils
  • Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist and do not allow it to dry out
  • Hardiness: Hardy perennial

For the best results, plant Trollius 'Golden Queen' where the soil remains reliably moist. It prefers cooler conditions and may benefit from some afternoon shade in warmer climates. Avoid prolonged periods of drought, particularly during hot summer weather.

Once established, 'Golden Queen' forms a dependable clump that returns each year. Cut back the foliage after flowering if it begins to look tired, and fresh growth will emerge as the season progresses.

Planting information

- Dig a hole to the required depth. You can find this required depth for each type of bulb, tuber or root in the growing guides.

- Depth is measurement of space between the soil line and top of bulb or bare root.

- Set the bulbs or bare root in place, pointed side or sprout side upward.

- Cover the bulbs by replacing the soil and water thoroughly.
