Description
Spigelia ‘Little Redhead’ is a striking perennial that brings an unusual splash of colour to the garden from late spring into summer. Its distinctive tubular flowers are rich scarlet red on the outside, opening to reveal bright golden-yellow star-shaped tips that seem to glow against the deep green foliage below.
Despite its exotic appearance, this is a remarkably reliable and easy-going plant. It forms neat, upright clumps that sit comfortably among other perennials without becoming overbearing, making it an excellent choice for mixed borders, woodland-style plantings and partially shaded areas of the garden.
The vivid flowers are highly attractive to pollinators and provide welcome colour at a time when many spring-flowering plants are beginning to fade. Planted alongside ferns, hostas, heucheras, astrantias and other shade-loving perennials, ‘Little Redhead’ creates a beautiful contrast in both colour and form.
For best results, grow in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It thrives in partial shade, though it will also perform well in a sunny position where the soil remains reliably moist. Once established, it is a long-lived perennial that returns year after year with minimal attention.
A truly distinctive garden plant, Spigelia ‘Little Redhead’ offers vibrant colour, excellent garden presence and exceptional wildlife value, all within a compact and well-behaved habit.
