Description
If you're looking for a perennial that stops visitors in their tracks, Papaver ‘Red Rumble’ delivers. Producing some of the largest flowers you'll find on any Oriental Poppy, this spectacular variety creates an unforgettable display in late spring and early summer.
The enormous blooms are a rich, velvety crimson-red, with elegantly ruffled petals surrounding dramatic dark centres. Each flower has the delicate, silk-like texture that makes Oriental Poppies so distinctive, while their exceptional size ensures they command attention from across the garden.
Held on sturdy stems above a mound of deeply textured green foliage, ‘Red Rumble’ provides a bold burst of colour just as many spring bulbs are fading and the summer border is beginning to gather momentum. It works beautifully in cottage gardens, sunny mixed borders and wildlife-friendly planting schemes, where its striking flowers attract pollinating insects throughout the season.
For best results, plant in a sunny position with well-drained soil. Once established, Oriental Poppies are remarkably long-lived and reliable, returning year after year with little maintenance. Like other varieties, the foliage naturally dies back after flowering as the plant enters its summer dormancy, before reappearing with fresh growth later in the season.
Combine with peonies, irises, alliums, salvias, nepeta and ornamental grasses for a succession of colour and interest throughout the border.
