Description
Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’ is a refined cactus dahlia known for its deep, velvety colouring and elegant, architectural form. The long, slightly curved petals create a classic spiky silhouette, giving the flower movement and lightness despite its dark tones.
The colour is a rich burgundy that can appear almost black in shade, while warmer red undertones emerge when the petals catch the sunlight. This subtle shift in tone gives the blooms depth and prevents the colour from ever looking flat or uniform.
Flowers typically reach 10–15 cm across and are held on tall, slender stems above clean green foliage. Plants grow to around 90–100 cm tall and flower continuously from midsummer until the first frosts with regular deadheading.
In the garden, Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’ is particularly effective for contrast planting. It stands out beautifully against pale pinks, creams, and whites, while also blending into deeper schemes with burgundy foliage and dark red companions. Its spiky form also helps break up rounder, fuller flower shapes in mixed borders.
As a cut flower, it is highly valued for its strong stems and dramatic colouring. Even a small number of stems can add depth, structure, and definition to arrangements without overwhelming softer blooms.
For best results, plant tubers in spring after the risk of frost has passed in a sunny, well-drained position, and stake early to support growth.
A sophisticated dark dahlia that brings understated drama, texture, and depth to the late summer garden.
