Description
Astrantia ‘Moulin Rouge’ is one of the richest and most distinctive Masterworts available, producing an abundance of deep crimson-red flowers that bring depth and sophistication to the garden throughout summer. Elegant rather than showy, it is a perennial that quietly draws the eye and rewards closer inspection.
Each flower is made up of a pincushion-like centre surrounded by finely pointed bracts in shades of burgundy, claret and deep red. The effect is beautifully intricate, creating a haze of rich colour above the foliage while still retaining the light, airy character that makes Astrantias so versatile in planting schemes.
Perfect for cottage gardens, romantic borders and naturalistic planting, ‘Moulin Rouge’ blends effortlessly with both bold and subtle companions. Its dark, jewel-like flowers pair particularly well with soft pink roses, salvias, ornamental grasses, alliums, campanulas, ferns and hostas, adding contrast and depth without overwhelming neighbouring plants.
A magnet for bees and other pollinators, it flowers freely from early summer onwards and often produces a second flush of blooms if spent flowers are removed. The long-lasting flowers are also excellent for cutting and can be dried for use in arrangements, retaining much of their colour and charm.
For best results, grow in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. It is particularly valuable in those cooler areas of the garden where its rich colouring can be fully appreciated. Reliable, elegant and easy to grow, ‘Moulin Rouge’ is a perennial that brings structure, texture and a touch of old-world character to the border year after year.
