Description
Dahlia ‘Twyning’s Smartie’ is a lively, free-flowering single dahlia that brings colour, movement and pollinators into the garden from midsummer until the first frosts. Its simple flower form features a single ring of petals surrounding an open central disc, making it especially attractive to bees and other beneficial insects. What makes this variety truly stand out is its unpredictable colouring. Each bloom can vary significantly, ranging from soft white to rich pinks and deep purple-red tones, often streaked or striped across the petals. On a single plant, no two flowers look exactly the same, creating a naturally playful and ever-changing display.
Flowers are small and abundant, typically reaching around 6–8 cm across, but produced in large quantities throughout the season. This ensures a continuous, dynamic show rather than a single flush of bloom. Plants form a bushy, upright habit, growing to approximately 75–90 cm tall. This makes ‘Twyning’s Smartie’ easy to incorporate into borders, containers or mixed planting schemes without overwhelming neighbouring plants.
In the garden, it brings a more natural, informal feel compared to fully double dahlias. It works particularly well in cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly planting schemes and perennial borders, where its open flowers add lightness and movement among more structured plants. As a cut flower, it offers a more relaxed, garden-style effect rather than formal structure, adding texture and colour variation to arrangements.
Dahlia ‘Twyning’s Smartie’ thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is easy to grow, highly productive, and responds well to regular deadheading, producing more blooms the more it is cut.
