Description
Dahlia ‘Playa Blanca’ is a clean, elegant cactus dahlia that brings crisp white structure and long-lasting summer performance to the garden. It stands out not through colour, but through form and clarity, making it one of the most versatile white dahlias for borders, containers, and cutting gardens. The blooms are fully double with narrow, rolled petals that create a classic cactus shape. Each flower forms a slightly spiky, starburst-like structure that feels modern and architectural, while still soft enough to blend easily into mixed plantings. Flowers typically reach 10–12 cm across and are held on strong, upright stems that make them excellent for cutting.
Plants are naturally compact and well-balanced, usually growing to around 50–80 cm tall. This makes ‘Playa Blanca’ especially useful for smaller gardens, patio pots, and the front to middle of borders, where its neat habit and continuous flowering can be fully appreciated. Flowering begins in midsummer and continues right through until the first frost. Regular cutting and deadheading encourage an especially generous display, with new blooms produced steadily throughout the season.
In the garden, the pure white flowers create a cooling effect during warmer months and catch low evening light beautifully. ‘Playa Blanca’ pairs effortlessly with soft pastels, rich purples, deep burgundy tones, and late-summer grasses, acting as both a highlight and a balancing element in planting schemes. As a cut flower, it is highly reliable. The stems are long, clean, and strong, and the blooms hold well in a vase. Its neutral colour makes it one of the easiest dahlias to use in floral arrangements, from romantic palettes to bold seasonal mixes.
Plant tubers in spring after the risk of frost has passed, in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly once growth begins and stake if needed in more exposed areas. In colder regions, lift and store tubers after the first frost.
