Description
Dahlia ‘Islander’ is a classic dinnerplate dahlia valued for its impressive bloom size and soft, elegant colouring. The flowers regularly reach 20–25 cm across, creating strong visual impact and making this variety a standout feature in any summer border. The blooms are fully double, formed from broad, gently curved petals that create a full, open shape without looking rigid. Colour sits in a warm shell pink range, often deepening slightly towards the centre with subtle blush and creamy undertones depending on light conditions. The result is a soft, romantic tone that blends easily into a wide range of planting schemes.
Plants grow to around 100–120 cm tall and produce sturdy stems capable of supporting the large flowers, although early staking is essential to keep growth upright and controlled. Flowering begins in midsummer and continues through to the first frosts with regular deadheading. In the garden, Dahlia ‘Islander’ performs best as a focal point or back-of-border planting where its scale can be fully appreciated. It works beautifully in soft, romantic schemes alongside whites, apricots, and deeper pinks, and also integrates well into pastel-inspired borders.
As a cut flower, it is a reliable dinnerplate variety that delivers strong visual impact in arrangements. A single bloom can easily anchor a bouquet, while the soft pink tones make it highly versatile across different floral styles.
For best results, plant tubers in spring once the risk of frost has passed in a sunny, well-drained position with plenty of space for development. Consistent watering and regular cutting will encourage continuous flowering through the season.
A generous, soft-toned dinnerplate dahlia that delivers scale, elegance, and dependable summer performance.
