Description
Dahlia ‘Black Narcissus’ is one of the most dramatic cactus dahlias available, prized for its near-black colouring and large, architectural blooms. The long, narrow petals twist and curve into an elegant spiky form, creating flowers with remarkable texture and movement. The colour is an exceptionally deep velvet red that appears almost black in lower light, while rich burgundy and dark wine tones emerge when the petals catch the sun.
The large blooms can reach up to 15–20 cm across, giving this variety impressive presence in borders and cutting gardens alike. Its strong flower shape contrasts beautifully with softer planting styles, adding depth and structure to mixed summer displays.
Growing to approximately 90–120 cm tall, Dahlia ‘Black Narcissus’ produces long, sturdy stems that hold the blooms proudly above the foliage. Flowering begins in mid-summer and continues right through to the first frosts with regular deadheading, providing months of rich colour late in the season.
This variety works especially well planted alongside blush pinks, creamy whites, pale apricots, silver foliage, and ornamental grasses, where the dark flowers become even more striking. It also pairs beautifully with deeper planting schemes featuring burgundy foliage, plum tones, and rich purples for a more dramatic effect.
As a cut flower, ‘Black Narcissus’ is particularly valued for its bold form and intense colouring. Even a few stems can transform an arrangement, adding contrast, depth, and a strong focal point.
For best results, plant tubers in spring once the risk of frost has passed, in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. Due to the height and size of the blooms, staking is recommended early in the growing season.
A powerful and sophisticated dahlia that brings bold texture and dark elegance to the late summer garden.
