Description
Dahlia Tartan is one of those dahlias that never slips out of fashion. Introduced in the mid twentieth century, it has kept its place in gardens for generations thanks to its sheer presence and unforgettable colouring. The blooms are enormous and carry a striking mix of deep burgundy and bright white, each petal twisting slightly so that no two flowers look the same. Up close the colours almost shimmer, and from a distance the plant reads as a bold splash of rich summer colour.
This variety grows into a tall, impressive plant that quickly becomes a centrepiece in the border. On our grower’s fields it is often one of the tallest dahlias in the rows and also one of the most generous. A single clump can produce an impressive number of flowers through the season and new buds appear steadily from midsummer until the first frost. The stems are strong enough for cutting which makes Tartan a wonderful choice for anyone who loves to bring flowers indoors. In a vase the blooms last well and their dramatic colours create arrangements with real character.
Gardeners appreciate Tartan for more than its size. It is a reliable grower, settles in easily and performs beautifully with a sunny spot and well drained soil. It partners well with deep purples, soft whites and ornamental grasses, and is equally effective in a mixed border or a dedicated dahlia bed. With time the plant forms a robust clump that can be lifted and divided to increase stock for the following year.
For a dahlia that has history, personality and outstanding flower power, Dahlia Tartan remains one of the most rewarding choices you can grow.
