Growing Guide: How to Grow Veronica Longifolia (Speedwells)

Veronica Longifolia, commonly known as 'Speedwells,' is a prized, easy-to-grow perennial with a long blooming period, cherished by gardeners. Their spiky, colourful flowers elegantly rise, attracting butterflies. The exceptionally showy Veronica flowers unfurl from the base upwards, gracing gardens from early to late summer. Growing in clumps up to 45 - 60 centimetres high, they are ideal for borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, and meadows.

How to Grow:

Light:

Performs best in full sun or partial shade.

Soil:

Thrives in well-draining, rich, and moist soil.

  • Plant in the spring, selecting a sunny spot with well-draining soil.
  • Loosen the soil and incorporate compost.
  • Dig a hole and place the roots, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
  • Water thoroughly.

How to Care:

  • Water in the summer if there is less than 2.5 centimetres of rainfall per week.
  • Cover with a thin layer of compost and a 5 centimetre layer of mulch to retain moisture.
  • Deadhead to encourage more blooms.

By following these guidelines, you can cultivate and care for Veronica Longifolia, adding vibrant beauty to your garden.
